Dried/Pelletized Food Waste Fertilizer Product Development and Market Research Study

Introduction

[COMPANY] ([COMPANY]) is a development company finalizing its plans to construct its first anaerobic digestion facility, which will be located in XXXX. As part of the manufacturing process, the food waste will be anaerobically digested in order to generate ‘green’ energy. Following anaerobic digestion, the solid material will be dried and pelletized and/or granulated, in order to produce a fertilizer or heating pellet. In order to complete its ‘due diligence’, [COMPANY] wishes to evaluate potential markets, identify potential end-users (customers) and verify a realistic value for its perspective pelletized/granulated product(s). [COMPANY] expects to produce approximately 5,500 tons (85% TS) annually of a product possessing a total nitrogen and phosphorus (as P2O5) of 4.1% and 3.8 respectively. The expected potassium content is unknown at this point. [COMPANY] believes that they have 'a market' for the potential heating pellets, but wants to explore the marketability and value of a fertilizer product.

[COMPANY] ([COMPANY]) having experience and specialized knowledge of thermal treatment of various materials, as well as marketing, utilization and distribution of these (and related) products, has been asked to provide a proposal to assist in product development and market research of [COMPANY]’s new product.

TASKS

Evaluate Products / Product Technologies

At the onset of the project, [COMPANY] will solicit [COMPANY] and [COMPANY] for additional production data for its pending production facility. Further, analytical data and samples will be evaluated, if made available, as will related process data, so that [COMPANY] can better understand the typical chemical, physical and biological properties of the product. Finally, [COMPANY] will evaluate the expected [COMPANY] manufacturing equipment (technologies) in order to determine if it possesses the capability to manufacture a product that will best meet market requirements (and obtain the highest value). If possible, perspective product samples will be visually inspected, as will the production equipment. Task 1 is critical because the physical and chemical characteristics of the product will greatly affect its marketability and value.
